Doctor of Pharmacy | Course | Career Path | India

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D):

Duration of Course : 

• Six academic years (Five years study and one year Internship) after PUC or D.Pharm 

• Three years (Two years study and one year Internship) after B.Pharm

Course Content : 

o Theory and practical subjects very similar for B.Pharm course 

o Internship or residency for one year in multi speciality teaching hospital 

Includes postings in speciality hospital units 

Six months in general medicine department 

Two months each in three other speciality departments

Duration of the course. –  

a) Pharm.D: The duration of the course shall be six academic years (five years of study and one 

year of internship or residency) full time with each academic year spread over a period of not 

less than two hundred working days. The period of six years duration is divided into two phases 

– 

 Phase  I    –   consisting of First, Second, Third,  Fourth and Fifth academic year. 

Phase II – consisting of internship or residency training during sixth year involving posting in 

speciality units. It is a phase of training wherein a student is exposed to actual pharmacy practice 

or clinical pharmacy services and acquires skill under supervision so that he or she may become 

capable of functioning independently. 

b) Pharm.D. (Post Baccalaureate): The duration of the course shall be for three academic years (two 

years of study and one year internship or residency) full time with each academic year spread 

over a period of not less than two hundred working days. The period of three years duration is  divided into two phases – 

Phase  I    –   consisting of First and Second academic year. 

Phase II – consisting of Internship or residency training during third year involving posting in 

speciality units. It is a phase of training wherein a student is exposed to actual pharmacy practice 

or clinical pharmacy services, and acquires skill under supervision so that he or she may become 

capable of functioning independently. 

Minimum qualification for admission to. –  

a) Pharm.D. Part-I Course – A pass in any of the following examinations - 

(1) 10+2 examination with Physics and Chemistry as  compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects: 

Mathematics or Biology. 

(2)  A pass in D.Pharm course from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under 

section 12 of the Pharmacy Act. 

(3) Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India as equivalent to any of the above examinations. 

Provided that a student should complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st

December of the year  of admission to the course. 

Provided that there shall be reservation of seats for the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, 

Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes in accordance with the instructions issued by the Central 

Government/State Government/Union Territory Administration as the case may be from time to time.

b) Pharm.D. (Post Baccalaureate) Course - 

A pass in B.Pharm from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of 

the Pharmacy Act: 

Provided that there shall be reservation of seats for the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, 

Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes in accordance with the instructions issued by the Central 

Government/State Government/Union Territory Administration as the case may be from time to time. 

Number of admissions in the above said programmes shall be as prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of 

India from time to time and presently be restricted as below – 

i)  Pharm.D. Programme – 30 students. 

ii)  Pharm.D. (Post Baccalaureate) Programme – 10 students

Increasing number of hospitals, nursing homes and pharmaceuticals companies all over the country is a clear indication of the growing scope in this area. Pharmacy offers reasonably good career opportunities both by way of jobs as well as in terms of starting your own business. The job avenues for a pharmacist are with pharmaceutical industry, government departments, universities, teaching hospitals, investigation and research institute etc. Within the pharmaceutical industry you might be involved in activities relating to the development, formulation, production or marketing of new drugs for clinical use. Drug control administration and armed forces also offer a wide range of opportunities to pharmacists. Appointments are also available in sale promotion work as medical representatives. As a Medical Representative he keeps the medical practitioner informed about the new drugs and treatments developed by various pharmaceutical companies and thus indirectly promote their sales.

M.pharm or Ph.D holders are normally absorbed in research work, to develop new useful drugs, in laboratories and in production work in pharmaceutical industry and analyzing them for purity and strength. Pharmacist may also take up teaching as a profession as lectures in pharmacy colleges and universities.

Pharmacists are hired within the central and state government departments- the Health Protection Branch of the Department of Health and Welfare, the Pest Control Division of Agriculture, the Department of National Defense, Provincial Research Councils, and the Provincial Departments of Agriculture or the Environment. There is also employment opportunities within the food and cosmetic industries or within any other industry that requires the assurance that new products are as safe and effective as possible. In government departments, a pharmacist maintains proper records according to various Government acts governing the profession of pharmacy. As a drug inspector or government analyst he is to make sure that the drugs manufactured and sold, are of standard quality. 

A diploma or degree holder in Pharmacy, after registering with the State Pharmacy Council, can set up and run their own pharmacy or chemists and druggists shop to stock and sell medicines and dispense them according to doctors prescriptions. In a retail Pharmacy he has varied duties, including buying and selling of related items demanded by the public.

B.Tech - Biotechnology

B.Tech - Biotechnology: Biotechnology is a science that involves manipulation of living organisms to get the desired results. The techniques involved in the process have evolved parallel to and subjected by the development of other areas of science and technology. Bi.P.C students can seek admission in this stream of engineering, provided they take the bridge course in Mathematics offered by Board of Intermediate before the counselling. Biotechnology is an integration of several sciences, applied to living cells, with the posibility of producing from widely available renewable resourses, substances and compounds essential to life and the well being of man. so it is an interdisciplinary science encompassing not only biology, but also other subjects, including physics, chemistry, mathematics and Engineering. Mainly research-oriented, it is the field that has created Dolly, the cloned lamb, and introduced scientific methods for genetic engineering, and new modes of propagation. Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing fields as it finds applications in areas as varied as medicine, food technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and environmental conservation. In fact, the use and application of biotechnology spans a wide range of activities, including developing new varieties of seeds, improving livestocks breeds, creating pesticides of various kinds, formulating cures for genetically inherited diseases and developing industrial enzymes that hasten the production processes. There are many application of biotechnology such as developing various medicines, vaccines and diagnostics, increasing productivity, improving energy production and conservation. Biotechnology's intervention in the area of animal husbandry has improved animal breeding. It also helps to improve the quality of seeds, insecticides and fertilizers. Environmental biotechnology helps for pollution control and waste management. The work of Biotechnologist is essentially scientific and research oriented, which aims at the application of technology to the improvement of life and developement of a variety of end uses, Biotechnologists are therefore involved in production as well as marketing and research. There is an option of doing B.Sc. or B.Tech in biotechnology. Most of the courses are combined with Engineering subjects or in the biology course. Some institutes offer B.Tech biotechnology itself. Eligibility: No candidate shall be admitted to the Bachelor in Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery (Degree) Course unless he has: (a) Passed the Intermediate Science or its equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as his subjects: (b) Attained the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of his admission to the first year of the course. (c) Blind (including colour blind), deaf and/or dumb candidates shall not be allowed for admission in the course.

Description: Homeopathy is a system of medicine, which is based on the tenet "like cures like," i.e., substances that cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can also cure those same symptoms in someone who is sick. Homeo means similar and pathy means disease. It was founded by a German physician Samuel Hahnemann around 1800. Homeopathy bases its cures on the fact that every person in the world has a different mental, physical and emotional setup. So you can't cure a person unless you find out his/her constitution. The uniqueness of this form of treatment lies in the fact that it believes in treating the whole person rather than the illness alone. So a homeopathic practitioner typically begins by taking detailed note of the patient's medical history, temperament, family background, family history of diseases, diet preferences, lifestyle, and emotional state. Based on these findings, the homeopathic practitioner builds up a profile of symptom and then prescribes suitable homeopathic medicines. Eligibility: Medical entrance tests or pre-medical tests (commonly known as PMTs) are conducted to identify students with the potential for the rigour of medical studies. The national level medical entrance tests are open to students without reference to their place of domicile. Medical entrance tests conducted by state level authorities/ organisations are meant for shortlisting students of state domicile for admission to the medical colleges within the state. Typical Requirements A basic requirement for applying for medical entrance tests is that the student should be at least 17 years old on or before 31st December of the year of admission. Upper age limit, where specified, is 25 years. The aspirant should have completed plus two or its equivalent examination with the subjects physics, chemistry and biology. Sometimes, there is a clause that the applicant should have passed the qualifying examination in the first attempt. Sometimes, the medical entrance test is in the form of a common health science entrance test which means that students aspiring for any of the health/medical science related courses like MBBS/ BDS/ BAMS/ BUMS/ BHMS/ Physiotherapy/ Occupational Therapy/ Nursing/ Veterinary Science should appear for a common entrance test. This does not in any way, change the content of the entrance test. Written test Typically, medical entrance tests have questions from physics, chemistry and biology (botany and zoology). In general, the mix of questions is such that the focus on biology, which is a combination of zoology and botany, is as much as that on physics and chemistry together. Most of the time there is negative marking for a wrong answer. This would be indicated in the information bulletin or prospectus.
